Build off:(perhaps suggested or already done the search wasnt all that revealing) Have you DYI folks ever held a build off? Could ppl take it like a challenge and in the end the community votes as to whos built the best chux? most orginal? best fire? best wooden? etc.??
Passaround: Someone makes/builds a pair of chux and they get mailed to ppl sequentuially on the list they make a small video about the chux anre review them. This might help some indy chux makers get some exposure, grow the market share a bit... or maybe someone might find they build custom chux that EVERYONE enjoys? end result your DYI designs which might never reach other chuckers does and you get feedback on your build...
just wondering if this interests anyone.

sounds like a good plan dude id be interested for sure be a good excuse to build a pair of throwing chux :2thumbsup:

Buildoff sounds cool. Weve talked about having a pass around though, didnt really play out to well. With all the shipping and some ppl having problems with customs/law in their country.

thats a shame... its often done with balisongs in the US, too bad customs makes it a pain to do something like that, it could be really fun still a builder might get a short list together of ppl they could send to and still get their chux reviewed an passed around?

Personally I think its a cool idea, to try out others homemades and share how to build nice cheap chux. Almost all of my chux are homemade(Except for my Woodalls, and my now 2 broken sets of Cochrans.RIP) which is like 10 pairs or so....I love to share my ideas n stuff...
YOu have any homemades?
-
No as it stands I do not...
I am working on some hardwood ones.
I am also thinking of putting a metal ring (like the one you would find in a tarp where you would string the rope throug) seating that ring in and THEN threading the chux perhaps causing way less fray on my paracord.
I am sure this has been done but its what I am thinking of doing.

oops forgot to mention... I am making them out of scrap Tiger Maple... http://www.bobkloes.com/images/bed-tiger-maple-queen-close.jpg
they should be turned (3 pair) at 1" to 1"1/4 taper...
thinking also about setting moasic pins in them before they are laqured.
double or tripple paracord with the metal "eyelet" set to reduce friction.
any thoughts?

Definately go with the Brass gommets for the smooth spin and rope frey resistance, they are well worth it, and can get a pack full of diff. sizes for like 5-8 dollars at like Home Depot/Lowes...
Tiger Maple is gonna look badass.
Keep us posted for sure, and remember to ask questions if you come into any snags dude.
Good luck

Maple's a nice wood and tiger has some nice striations in it, plus the eyelet's a good idea. If I'm not mistaken Woodall's have a brass grommet at the top for that very purpose on their cordies. I wouldn't mind making a pair to pass around the forum, but I'd have to order in some more swivels first. If they're going to experience a lot of swinging by a large group of people, I'd probably just go with chain for the endurance factor. I've already told my sister I'd make another pair for her for Christmas to match the pair out of my collection she bought off me at the last family event, and I get three pairs out of two dowels, so I figure by the end I December, I can make two more pairs of Oak chucks with heavy duty SPRO swivels, non-taper, end-weighted with some steel bar.

In the style of the first pair on the left but without the hokey flat washers on the end.

Yea my Woodalls have brass grommets, theyre smooth as hell.
+1 to the SPRO's, those DIYs chux are pretty much the only ones I use now.

Np man :thumb: If you havent already definately check out the "Pictures of your nunchucks(Added th Photobucket etc)"etc.etc. thread, you could get alot of ideas from there soooo many chux, and of course im sure youve checked out the DIY section already?
-
Oh yeah man I have been through most of the DYI portion of the forum. Its awesome stuff... I think there are even a few makers here who I would buy chucks from and be honored to have them as "customs" vs the stuff cranked out at a factory.

good news as well on the aluminum front... my friend who is a welder has some scrap from an aluminum dock hes building...
1 1/4" aluminum pipe... he said he would hook me up with a bit of it...
any reason why I wouldnt want 1 1/4"?

Well it's a little on the bulky side, but not unmanageably so. What would be groovy is if you could cut two very long and thin downward-facing triangles down opposing sides of each pipe and hammer them flush down the length so they'd be like artificially tapered 1 1/4 at the bottom and around an inch at the top. Given though, it works in my head, it may not work in reality, but it'd be pretty slick if it did.
-
I have just the piece of metal to do that with is at my dads shop, but I would have to weld it to a long skinny pole so it could be taken to the end of the chux then ... I dunno rubber hammer them...
Its shaped like a bullet its about 1 inch at its widest point and it came from a very old school wood burning thing... but its solid steel.
heh
cool idea.

My friend whos a welder stopped by... with 4 pairs of 14" aluminum pipe, and 4 pairs of 12" aluminum pipe.
its 1 1/4 diameter and they are beefy as hell.
I think I will drill some holes then borrow my dads buffing wheel and try and mirror finish them with scotchbrite... or close to mirror, I dont feel like messing with cutting compounds.... but I hope they polish nice.
These things are beefy as hell as I mentioned...
Anyone whos built aluminum chucks with pipe that large in diameter have any advice as far as chain and attatchments?

So is there interest in a build off where members vote on best build?

I would definately be into, a build off competition. But the only problem is, the timeframe we would have to get ppl to compete...for people to gather money/ideas/and the time it takes to build. Another problem I see is some people dont have access to more advanced tools and resources, so theyre would have to be some big handicap in place, for people that have limited tools to the people that have drills/sanders/lots of money to put in the project/metal working tools(For aluminums and other metals)/dremels etc. for creating desings in wood and a whole other slew of things that would make things lopsided. I build most of my chux but I only have access to a drill, hacksaw, and some sandpaper...and limited money.
Some things for everyone to think about.
-
while I would agree I would also mention that a lot of ppl are building homemade chux anyhow and theres no sense in not sharing them in the buildoff purely for concentrated feedback. Subsequently, there is no such thing as a even playing field, some ppl will always have more time more resources better tools and more money... Just like some freechuxers are just more talented... doesnt stop other ppl from competing and perticipating and finding good matchups...
one way we could handle this is by making three levels of compatation with verying build dollars or material componets... but the problem with this is that limiting ppl while convientent for the compatation might well be keeping some of the best and sweetest pairs of DYI chux from being created.
Timeframe wise this is something that ppl should have a good solid 30 days with.
I still think its a fun an valid idea, I guess it just needs to be defined by the community here so ppl will be enguaged and interested in a way that the bulk of users can agree on.
I would buy a pair of custom DYI chux from some of the better builders around here.. its almost as neat and tangiable as collecting anything else, like HEY I got a pair of Loosey's chux (review) (make videos) (discuss builds)... I would be proud to have some of the sweet DYI's I have seen on the board for sure I mean It would be cool to have some handmade chux from some ppl on the site dont you think???

The first Build Off should be whistle chucks.... http://www.freestyleforum.net/index.php?topic=11003.0
What do you think?

Sounds like a well good idea. I'd love to take part but it would have to be in the summer when I've got time to build :-)
