Does anyone have any of these?

Those are the pairs i get from damien.  the screw at the top has to be changed from hex to round.  two washers have to be put on either side of the screw, and the final touch would be a remount to round handles

I've never seen chucks with U-swivels. I've heard that they're a lot more durable than ball-bearings?
It's a mystery to me that these are rare..

I bought a pair very similar to those from an American distributor (you can prolly find European distributor too).
I must admit they are great show pieces but way too heavy and dangerous for freestyle. Think chipping, snapping, and smashing of bones. They could kill with one blow.

have them remounted to a lighter wood and have them rounded off instead of hex then they will be just like speed swivels

Do you know the specific weight on them?

Specific... no, atomic mass... yes.   j/k

Using my "very reliable and highly accurate" bathroom scale, they weighed in at 1 pound, but I estimate a little more.

Those puppies want to fly out of your hands on every move, and if that happened they would surely destroy anything in their path... even Matt-Chez.

The japanese page says about 450g.

So you actually understood what was on that webpage? Unfortunately, Google doesn't translate the text on the buttons.
Seems like a better idea to wait until my friend goes there on holiday next summer, then he can scour the nunchaku market for me. :-D

ive tried ones like these before, they were metal, slightly diffrent design with a deeper ridge, and i gotta say, they are a bit too heavy for me (freestyle wise), but really good for strikes, they smash through anything smashable basically!   aerial's are pretty deadly though, wouldnt use them for freestyle at all.

One good shop is in Shinjuku, "Koncrete", this is website↓

and  "ISAMI" is also good shop.
here is international website↓

(but there is NO nunchaku... :daah: why!?!? !! Japanese website is too...どうしてだ!? I got wooden nunchaku at this shop in Yokohama 5 years ago.....I'm sad )

anyway, I hope you will get nice nunchaku when you are in Japan :thumb:

i recently (Thursday) tried out some u swivels steel chucks, however i found them relatively stiff compared to ball race, may only be expected or they may have been poorly kept (that said they were first hand on sale) while they may last longer i don't find them fluid enough, but it may just be a matter of opinion.

dont know what others think about fluidity of u swivels, does anyone regularly use them along with other swivel types for an accurate comparison's?

Thanks Rel unfortunately those arnt the U's that Im looking for. There was a company back in the 70s and 80s that made superior martial arts weapons. It was called Dolan sports. Dolan invented and patented the U-swivel nunchaku, Its almost impossible to find real Dolan U swivels, he died a while back, and no one continued his work. The chuks in that picture are the newer imitation u swivels, they dont work as good as Dolans. Dolans also made other superior weapons.

Thanks to Derek I recently received a set of Dolans U-Swivel's they are unbelievable, anybody who prefers chained chuks should look into getting a set (good luck) Once you swing a pair of Dolan U's you will wonder why swivel chuks are so popular. Imagine having a set of chain chucks that the bearings wont ever break! They are amazing. Derek knew how bad Ive been wanting some, and the next thing you know Im getting a package from Los Angeles. He sent me the gift of a lifetime. Derek's the man, he knows basically everything there is to know about the history of nunchaku.

Ok after some searching in the depths of the internet for a while it seems Douglas Dolan's company was called Kemco (Kobudo Equipment Manufacturing Company). They did restart a website (http://www.kemcoinc.com) after Dolan stoppd, but that sadly has now finished too.

i got two of those
the sticks are small (10 inches or 25 cm), they are somewhat heavy and hurt like hell when you go wrong
but i love em, they are speedy and i fear less doing the buzzsaw with them than with usual 30cm nunchaku

I found using really heavy metal chucks are good for conditioning for fire chucks. As fire chucks tend to be a bit heavier(cause of the wick, grip tape, and fuel soaked into the wick) and once you get confident enough with hard metal chucks, fire chucking is a breeze.

Nope.  Since they're supposedly indestructible and they haven't recouped the cost of designing them, if they just sold the swivels, people would just use them to build their own radically cheaper DIYs.  Given, not out of wood half as nice, but much cheaper nonetheless.

True it cost a great deal to make these caps.  We only charge our customers for what it cost us to make the U-Swivel caps and nothing else.  Metal is not exactly cheap these days sorry.

yeah, i had a pair of BB until they broke a while ago..they spin a hell of a lot more/faster than my u-swivels..
and they feel a small bit smoother when permorming some tricks, but all in all, they are pretty much the same..except they don't last as long... :-P

There is a problem with that nunchaku....  :|  can you please send it to me to check that they will be safe to use?!?

From now on I will be the "quality tester", and I think that a lot of nunchakus may need tests  :lmfao: :lmfao:

I was notified today that my 2 pair of U-swivels are on the way!  I usually order 2 pairs whenever I get nunchaku so I can do doubles.  Should be here early next week!

Very nice!! :arg  and how you design them?!?

well my woodalls came in today! they were sent off 2 days ago from across the country.  they are not movigui, they are the curly maple. a little heavier than movigui if i remember correctly. so what about gluing the head pins in?

Our design does not use head pins so no worries about it coming off.  Glad they arrived within 2 days. Enjoy them!

So if I understand the matt's u-swivel problem correctly the pin(more like a bolt, but hollow) sheared off where the red arrow points?

The screw is a longer length but they wouldnt have broke if they were glued in.  I have an indian ebony hardwood pair that hasnt broke

So by longer in length you mean sunken into the wood and glued so that the pin itself doesn't swivel, but the "U" part does?

Matt:

Thanks for the video showing where the cap broke but you neglected to say what you were doing when this happened to the U-Swivel.  What maneuver you were doing and what surfaces you were on.  You never gave us an explanation about what you were doing with them when this occurred.  The only thing you told us is that they broke and where they broke but not how it was done.

We did offer to fix them for you free of charge.  You informed us that you had already made them into rope so that it wasn't necessary for us to fix them.  Bill emailed you a possible explanation of what might have occurred based on only the information that you sent us via an email.  We have made our quality checks more detailed so that nothing gets out that does not meet the specs.

I hope that you did well on your demonstration.

I have many pairs of old dolans uswivels and Ive never had a problem with them. But if you use them for striking or smashing them against concrete that's a whole different story
Title: Re: U-swivels?
Post by: Matt-Chez on August 29, 2009, 03:00:53 AM
never did any striking, and never used them anywhere NEAR concrete

its the snap strikes man,, they seem to kill all of my chucks,

im working on my own design for a double capped corded set of chucks,, its gonna be Fkin infallible!  only way they can break is if the sticks get snapped right in half.

will post a few pics next month once ive got the patent  8-)

Dude you cannot shoot with uswivels man I couldve told you that from the beginning.  I am very excited to see what you have planned as far as a new design

In my experience traditional triple string bindings are virtually indestructible, soundless and easy to replace.
My favorite chucks are 14" maple, they have triple string bindings, and I've dropped them, and hit with them, they won't break.
Of course you can cut the strings, and you can't grapple a sword.
I have done snap strikes with them.

By the way. it appears that the U Swivels you have pictured are the plain swivels. The ones I have are the better ball bearing units. My used Cocoboo units are the plain U Swivels. You can see the difference if you look closely at the swivel.

The response to my post was overwhelming. I could have asked for a lot more than I did, but I felt it was better to let them go to people who could really appreciate the quality. I could have backed out of some of my sales and sold to some individuals that were willing to pay more, but I am not that kind of person. But all good things come to an end and so has my supply. Thanks to all that bought and to all that inquired.

Pretty cool for you to bring some rare gems to the forum (even if I didn't reach a deal with you personally). Lots of folks are gonna be happy no matter what they paid, they just don't make them like that much these days.

Now if you ever turn up some 14"s you know who to contact first.
