Title: Custom metal Chucks I made!
Post by: aeronauticalNINJA on May 11, 2008, 04:33:56 AM
I have been welding for a while now and I decided to make some Chucks of my own!(on my break time)  So in this picture, the one on the Left is really heavy hollowed steel and weights a few pounds, the one in the middle is My all time favorite now! and is made of aluminum. Super smooth! and the one on the Right  is travel chucks that come apart. Made of steel but actually really hollow and light weight. all made with 550 cord.  Feel free to ask any question. or comment!

Could you give me a tutorial on how to make the one to the left? That would be great  :thumb:

I like em all! The ones on the right look more for show rather than actual practicallity?

Thanks, I was hoping everyone would like them.. they are my favorites now! As far as making a video tutorial, I don't think I will be able to do that.
I don't really want to bring my video camera into my workplace. Plus I welded the pins and end caps in place then ground them smooth so you can't even tell that there is a pin.  Most people ether don't know how to weld or don't have access to a welder.   But maybe I could take orders for people that want ones.  I'm not looking to start a business but it would be fun to make more on my spare time.  They would be totally customized to what you want like length, width, style, length of cord, ect, ect.  The cost would be pretty cheep,  depending on what you want but I'd say starting at 20 dollars for the materials and time  plus the cost to ship them to where ever.
I don't want to step on anyones toes and I don't know if selling on this site is tolerated but I thought I'd put the offer out there.
Let me know what you all think.  Thanks, Aeronautical

Do you also have access to a lathe at your work place or were the grooves already in the aluminum for the ones in the middle?

lathe,  all though, I'll admit that I copied off ones that I have seen before. I really liked the look   :whahaa  They look really cool when they are spinning! :chuck:

Cool I'd kill to have access to a metal lathe... I know the ones you modeled them after I have a matched pair (2 sets) of them they are chain link with u-swivels an I like them a lot. I also have a home made set I made from 3/4 solid aluminum polished to a mirror finish and using a cord (actually I made them detachable like your travel chucks, someone else on here coined the term un-chucks that's what I like to call'em as well) But I have to pay someone else to do any lathe work I require. I haven't counted lately but I'd guess I must have close to 20 pair of nunchaku now, most of them home made but have a few bought ones. Anyway, Nice Job on yours dude.

Un-chucks  :lmfao: thats great! I'll use that term.  Thats awesome that you have 20 pair. I got 10 now, only the 3 I made so far. Those 3/4 solid aluminum with the U swivels are the exact ones that I copied just customized a few things: Made them 10in. long. I think the other ones are 8in. (think they call them speed chucks) then a tension pin for a quick change for new 550 cord. then made the ends come to a dull point. Love them!

As for the ones on the left, they are heavy (haven't weighted them yet) and I use them for weight training and/or start with them first. Then switch to my other ones and then they just seem to fly with a mind of their own.  :doh I'm sure you know what I'm talking about!

The ones on the right were made with "Demonstration" in mind. but in all practicality they feel the same as octagonal wood chucks and about the same weight too. only I made these 10 in. long also to cut down on the weight. So they still feel great in every day use and practice!
Thanks for the great comments!  :-D

Those look awsome. I've got access to a metal lathe, so I might just do that. How thick is the metal?

I have over 50 spinny things. :D

Over 50 spinny things,  :-o Damn! Do you try to use them all or just a few favorites?  The ones on the left and in the center are 3/4 of an inch and the one on the right is about 1 inch thick or (wide)

Oh, and Remember that Lathe's are very, very dangerous if you haven't been trained on how to properly use them.. Please, Please, Get proper training before anyone attempts to use one.  I'm sure there are some of you that know what you are doing but I'm also sure that there are some that don't.   Safety First! :omg: :bleed

Where can I get tension pins? What are they anyway?
Title: Re: Custom metal Chucks I made!

Tension pin AKA Roll pin.

The one in the first pic is the most common type , I've never used the other one. The picture should be pretty much self explanatory but... they are used by drilling a hole just slightly smaller than the pin diameter so that when it is tapped in with a hamer the split on the side closes up a bit and the tension from this keeps the pin in place. I'm not sure if you can get them at most hardware stores or not but you can find them in places like Fastenal.
