What are they?
U-Swivel Nunchaku are type of chained nunchaku created by Douglas Dolan in 1976. U-Swivels differ from the more common ball bearing swivel nunchaku because of the head joint. The top of each stick consists of a pivot bolt with a head that holds the center portion of a u shaped swivel. A pin extends through the side arms of the U shaped swivel and through the lower loop of a clevis or shackle. The shackle connects to the chain, and the chain connects the two sticks. The U shaped swivels rotate and the clevis/shackle's move from side to side also.

U-Swivel nunchaku were very popular for years, but today are becoming very rare. While there are other companies that make U-Swivel nunchaku Dolans' is no longer in business.

Review
Ive seen U swivel Nunchaku over the years but have never had an opportunity to try any out. For years I used only used ball bearing chucks, but after hearing great things about U-swivels over and over I really started to want some. I noticed that people like Damien Romero, The Aerialist and Chuck Nasty all used U-swivels and loved them. I started to do some research about them and found that they were created in the 70s by Douglas Dolan, I also found out that Dolans company was out of business and getting a set of his U-swivels was a hard task. I looked for some for almost a year, but had no luck. Finally I was fortunate enough to try some because of an extremely nice gift Derek decided to give me. ONE OF HIS PERSONAL PAIRS OF USWIVELS. The second I opened the package I was ecstatic, the way they feel when you swing them is unlike any nunchaku Ive ever swung. They are fast, smooth, powerful, and very durable. They seem like with proper maintenance they could last a lifetime. I also love the way the chain is connected to the swivel, it opens up some interesting avenues. If you can get your hands on some you should. Its a shame that Dolans went out of business, but I hear Woodalls is in the process of developing their own U-swivel chucks. I cant wait to try them.

They are one of my favorite pairs of chucks thats for sure! I was thinking about buying a set of the knock offs just to try them out then Derek told me that Woodalls is making their own version. I think Im going to wait to try theirs.

I actually have two set of the Dolans swivel nunchaku. I got them 28 years ago and they STILL work as good as new! One pair is 14 inch octagon Brazilian Oak and the other I modified ( removed the swivel unit and applied them to a new chuck). The only downfall is that they didn't put their caps on tight enough and have a tendency to come lose. The ones I modified were carefully filed down on the wood to just not quite fit, then I turned them upside down and pounded them on a plank of wood to fit super tight. i can not ever get them off now lol...but in my opion, they were (and still are) the best design for nunchaku.
