I have recently made my first set of custom chucks. Using 22mm chrome plated copper piping and chain links, held with bolts.

The Mk1's have a couple of design issues, mainly that the nuts holding the bolts in place stick out too far, but the Mk2's will use tension pins.

My question is this. I was wondering if anyone knows what spray paints will work on the chrome plated copper pipe. I was thinking car primer, then a spray coat of metallic car paint to give them a nice shiny, colourful look.

Do you think this will work?

Isn't chrome cooler looking than paint?

I don't know, but spray paint usually does not have the same luster or resiliency as car paint.  The spray paints I have tried in the past (never on nunchaku or chrome) always seem much duller and flater than polished metal.  Never as good as factory or custom car paint.  Maybe you can take them to an auto body shop  :lmfao:

Seriously: You will definitely need the primer coat.  I'd suggest testing it first.  Maybe on the mk1's.  See if it looks good, if it chips, if it rubs off, etc...

i like the idea of taking em to an car paint place. they would know how to do it right. and maybe you can get that cool paint that changes color depending on how you look at it!

well I was actually going to paint it myself, Using the airbrush I use for my motorcyles (custom fuel tank designs and such).

Was just wondering if people knew whether the primer and paint will work on the  chrome pipes, of not bond and just flake off.

If you have a pro set up like that, you probably have a better idea than anyone else here.  Maybe you should use a high grit sandpaper on the chucks before the primer coat.  If it is still rough after the primer, sand lightly and do another coat of primer until you have a smooth surface for the final coat.

The above technique will work for most surfaces, but I don't know much about painting on metal.  I've painted a lot of objects, wood and plastic mostly, but very little on metal.

not a pro set up. just an air brush, too much free time and a willingness to have a go.

I'm not much beyond stencilling at the moment, but I am improving slowly.

Its just the chrome finish which is worrying me, I'm not sure it will take the paint well.

wow, i would love an airbrush. it seems to be a dying art, but its still good for customising things like cars/bikes etc

where did you get yours from and how much was it if you dont mind me asking? also how often do you have to buy paint for it??

PS - can we have a picture if your chucks??

mmmm my mate. marrrrrrrrrmiiiite.

You mean sorta like this:

Car primer, and then standard spray paint. 3 tone. :)
