DIY bug bit me.

Practice foam nunchucks / foamchucks

1 and 2. materials: PVC pipe, cord, saw, bicycle handlebar foam, soldering iron.
3. Saw 2 pcs PVC pice into 2 rods (desired length).
4. Using soldering iron, punch 4 holes on top of each rod (2 holes each side). This is where cord will be tied.

6. Slide foam to cover holes.

EQUALS
Monkeyfist Firechucks

1. Materials: Aluminum rods (thin or thick), steel nail or drill, metal file, screwdriver, pliers, small nuts and bolts, chain (desired length), 2 extra chain links, 6 or more meters of cotton rope (length depends on rope thickness, better option would be kevlar rope for longer burns).
2. Saw 2 aluminum rods to desired length. Punch 2 holes on each end of the rod (all / both ends) with steel nail or drill (support aluminum by placing metal core when hammering to prevent deforming).
3 and 4. Attach the two rods to each other via chain with nuts and bolts. Cut excess bolt length and finish off as illustrated in SativaDust and d3vils arms' (file off excess sharp metal to prevent skin cuts).
5. Attach the extra chain links to each of the bottom ends of the rods using the same process. These will serve as the anchors where the monkeyfists will be attached.
6. Tie the rope to the chainlink with simple knot. This will serve as the core of the monkeyfist.
7. Start forming the monkeyfist knot as illustrated in Home of Poi's www.homeofpoi.com/articles/monkey_fist.php.
8 and 9. I use extra rods to maintain the form of the knots at different stages of the knot-tying process. Makes the tying easier.
10.  I also use a screwdriver to insert the rope towards the end of knot-tying when the loops are smaller. I also use pliers when pulling the knot tigher.
11. The monkey fist looks like a volleyball with six-sides. Modification of the monkeyfist knot made by situating the anchor in the middle of one of the sides instead of between three sides. (I think of it as dice. I situate the rod where the "One" dot is located instead of the corner of the dice where three sides meet.)
12. Monkey fist knot before tightening.
13. Tightened monkey fist knot.
14. Finished monkeyfist firechucks below prototype with braided cotton wick.

Note: May work on torches, jo and bo firestaffs as well. (I'm actually poofed after making this. Pulling the knots tight is tiring. May still shorten rods later... Tired.  :-()

Nice tutorial!

A few things I'm planning to try different from the above is:

Using Tee nuts and short screws to attach the chain. That keeps you from having to cut anything off and if the chain sucks you can swap chains but undoing the bolts :) When you cut and file them, you wont be able to unscrew them.

Also for the monkey fists I'm going to use the method that you do for making them for poi, and then run a bolt through the end of the chucks that the eye hook will fit securely too.

I want to be able to swap the heads without redoing the whole thing down the road :)

Also, I'm going to toy with some of that aluminum tape putting it inside the handle near the head that way it'll block the oxygen from coming down the tube and relighting them when trying to extinguish them.

Very cool tutorial though! It'll really get everyones minds cookin on ways to do them and maybe get some more kick ass ideas that none of us have thought of :)

Here ya go. :D Wasn't able to test it yesterday. If they're like the fire poi head I think they'll burn for at least 3 mins.

Thanks. :D Been toying with this idea since seeing you guys on youtube.  :greendude:

Yeah, realized that too. :( Chain sucks, have to change it.

That was my original intention. But while I was doing it I ended up tying part of the knot around the rod. Maybe I should have done it like what you mentioned, make the knot not on the eyehook while it's connected to the rod. :(

Also, I'm going to toy with some of that aluminum tape putting it inside the handle near the head that way it'll block the oxygen from coming down the tube and relighting them when trying to extinguish them.

Or jam something like wood or epoxy to seal the tubing? Didn't think of the possibility of relighting when extinguishing. :(

Cyricx and the others were toying with the idea in daveaminal firechucks post. Was trying it out unlit and I think it will do okay. Feels like (marching band) bass drum drumsticks tied together though. O_o;;

The one thing I worry about with doing the eye hook thing I want to try is the tubing beating on the kevlar. Your method, it fits right against and kinda around the tubing, so you won't have any wear and tear :)

Let us know how they do when you burn! :)

Also, you might try some tennis racket grip, it'll help alot :)

If you do tosses or throws at all, try to find some red grip :), easier to see the handles then black, and those watching won't notice the difference. :)

Relighting isn't a huge concern... it doesn't happen often and in fact if you got good spotters who know what they are doing it's more of a slight annoyance then a problem. :)

I think they will burn for longer than 3 mins. My normal firechucks burn for 2mins 30 secs, and my monkey firepoi burn for 10!

Nice chucks, added them to the DIY post. If you want to update the guide, just change the original post and post here or on my sticky http://freestyleforum.net/index.php?topic=1518.0

Just some updates. Tried it out a few hours ago.

1. Didn't have any tennis / badminton racket grip tape around the house so I wrapped rubber strips around the upper half.

2. The additional weight when it was wet with fuel threw me off, it slipped many times during the first rolls. (So much for muscle memory... O_o;; )

3. Burned for about 5 mins then I extinguished it, didn't want to push it any longer since it's just cotton rope.

:D

Thanks Zealot.

Sadly, kevlar products (wick, rope and thread) aren't available where I live. We have to import from overseas and they end up costing double. :(
