Howdy.  I'm a nunchuck noob; just got 2 pairs of foamy's yesterday, but I was playing with them for 3+ hours and know I'm going to have a lengthy affair with them.  So, I'm starting to research what my first *real* chuck purchase will be.  The only good online store I've seen so far is Woodall's, and I must say the Game of Death chucks are sexy

http://customworkshop.biz/osCommerce/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=147&osCsid=1e076153a1277fa38c3271d2f5b20e18 .  However, most of their stuff is pretty expensive - is there a better place?  I don't need custom chucks, but I would like something both very usable and classy.

What I really would like is:
Octagonal (love Japan, just got back from there - and I guess this is the trad. Okinawan style?)
Cord, not chain - and short, like 2.5-3 in.  I'm into rolls.
Probably wood

Is there a place you guys know of that has what I'm looking for?  Where do YOU shop?  I was big into knives for a while and there were certain stores online that pretty much everyone in the community knew of and frequented because of their great service and deals; is there something similar here?

Thanks!

I know where to get exactly what you want. Go to this link:
Code: [Select]
http://www.sakuramartialarts.com/Martial_Arts_Weapons_Nunchaku_Octagon_Rope_Corded_p/wea-9212-a1.htmI bought those and they are awesome! Perfectly balanced and real tough. I bought three different pairs from Woodall's also and they are my favorites, but the ones I'm recommending are the next best thing according to the preferences you've listed. And they are much cheaper too; however, you should try to save up and give Woodall's a try too.

Ahh, thanks a lot!  Those are very reasonably priced.  Question: for a beginner, is that too hard of wood?

Also: 12 inch or 14?  Keep in mind I'm not using these for fighting and I like doing rolls and fast stuff.

EDIT:

Would you recommend those at $23 over the Afr. Padauk Woodalls for $35? (Or black walnut for 40...)

Thanks again  :thumb: and sorry for all the questions.  Just trying to learn all I can before adopting my first baby...

Master Lee makes exellent chux that he stand behind with everthing he has. Not only that he video tapes makes the chux so you can see how they are handcrafted. Im a rockmaple fan myself but there are some exellent exotic wood to choose from as well

Boundless, I haven't used African Padauk though I've been wanting to get some since they're on sale. I've used black walnut and they are very light so they may fit your purpose. From Woodall's I've bought brazilian cherry, also light, and purple heart, which is slightly heavier and really looks amazing.

Now, the nunchaku from Sakura.com is kind of heavy so if you're looking for something lighter but still fitting your preferences, I recommend octagonal white waxwood with cord. You can get them here: http://www.karatedepot.com/wp-nu-24.html

white waxwood and black walnut are almost the same weight (I own both) but Woodall's is better balanced. Anyway, I hope this helps you make an informed choice.

Thanks everyone for all of the helpful replies.  Hopefully sometime I can return the favor for each of you.  I've got a lot to think about -- I'm leaning towards the woodall's (the Padauk or black walnut) because I'd rather get quality if I'm swinging something near my head - people mention that the handmade ones are better balanced, so I would assume that would help make sure that the only errors are on my end and not the chuck's.

The prochux are the only chux on the market that I know of that have a true balance point on every chux and are consistant in weight and balance points.

Hmm...I just looked at the prochux thread and some videos..think I may give those a whirl...

I'll plan on calling to order a pair tomorrow.  Hopefully they don't take long to make...

EDIT: Called and ordered 2 pairs.  Very helpful people.  I'll do a review of them after a week or so after they arrive (shipping tomorrow).

I have a pair almost indentical to those that I've had for about 10 years now.

They've taken... and given... a beating :)

I think you'll like them; I've been enjoying mine.  Read my review in the reviews section - and be sure to get some grip tape as they can be a little slippery.

Enjoy
