Well, if you want wood because you are afraid of metal while doing aerials, then you will still be afraid... a good hit with a wooden nunchaku is a very dangerous hit, so still you should fear a wood nunchaku.

You can try PVC nunchaku (DIY) to avoid getting hurt, or you can make a cord nunchaku for practice (http://www.freestyleforum.net/index.php?topic=11619.0)

But if you are careful, and start learning aerials from beginner to expert, knowing well when to get to the next level, you shouldn't have any problems with metal nunchaku

welcome and keep chucking! mahogany is a soft and light wood, so may be a good one to start. there is a point in light chucks that the wood is so light that it doesn't have the density to cut air and also won't carry momentum[ alot of speed is just adding power momentarily here and there to the momentum to keep speed going].  woodalls at the bottom of the page has neat charts about weight and hardness. :chuck: :chuck: :chuck:

i like yellow heart, purple heart, brazilian cherry[jotoba], bocote for medium+ weight chucks.[light to heaviest i think].
there are many sources of hard and uncommon wood dowels on the internet. perfect for diy projects.
plus wood all looks unique so color and grain varies from piece to piece. look around and see what you like and weigh your chucks and then you can get an idea of what would best suit you. :2thumbsup: 8-)

between stimulus and response there is a moment, in that moment you decide your future!

That's where I go for all my wood.  I got a good chunk of lignum vitae from there for dirt cheap, but the stuff is so difficult to work with that I've been holding off.  For your first pair of DIYs though, you might just want to stick to Lowes or Home Depot or whatever home improvement chain may be in your area.  They generally sell red and white oak dowels there(generically labeled "oak") as well as paracord, tension pins, and usually whatever else you need to complete your project...except for swivels, I've had no luck with them there, but SPRO swivels work well and you can order them here:

the kind that leads to getting laid!
You do not need to leave your room.  Remain sitting at your table and listen.
Do not even listen, simply wait.  Do not even wait, be quite still and solitary.
The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice,
it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.

my suggestion is poplar. Poplar dowels are really cheap at local hardware stores and is a very light wood. Since its cheap, it'd be easy to make multiple pairs and its not really a big deal if you mess up.

That and some nylon cord, or paracord, and your good to go!

Jati wood from Indonesia is very hard and strong, but very expensive.
